History: The beloved heroine of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) inspired this style. Hua Mulan (magnolia flower) was born in Shangyi village in Hebei Province to Hua Hu, a retired general. When Rouran Kehan Tu Lizi invaded, a soldier was conscripted from every family. Hua Mulan assumed the identity of her brother Hua Muli and fought disguised as a man. Her tale was recently depicted in the Disney animated feature film, Mulan.
Modern Mulan Quan is derived from a nearly extinct style, Hua Chia Chan, and uses taiji as its foundation. It also incorporates elements from gymnastics and Chinese folk dance. It was revived into its modern form by Mei Fing Ying, and is currently very popular in Beijing.
