CHIN WOO

History: Chin Woo, also Jing Wu, was founded by Hou Yuen Chia, a kungfu master who became famous in Shanghai in 1909 when he defeated a European wrestler who went there to challenge the Chinese, calling them the "Sick Men of Asia."
Loosely translated, Chin Woo means "excellent martial arts." Hou organized the Chin Woo school to make Chinese martial arts more accessible to the Chinese people. When Hou died in 1909 Chen Kung Chen, Yau Chen Pau and Li Wei Shen re-opened the Chin Woo school, and Hou's younger brother and his son continued to teach at the Chin Woo Association. It soon became the most famous and popular association in Shanghai, sponsoring most of the martial arts tournaments there.

The association has many famous martial artists teach at the Chin Woo school, and although they taught different styles, they all followed the Chin Woo regulations. In the 1920s the association sent teachers to Southeast Asia, helping spread the art there. Chin Woo is famous for teaching Eagle Claw and Praying Mantis, but it also has its own Chin Woo forms.
