He was then honored with the opportunity to study Mantis Fist under Shifu XuWanlong (5th generation authentic Mantis Fist Master) and he was accepted as his 6th closed-door disciple. He learnt elementary, mid-level and advanced level Mantis Boxing including fist form and weapons (such as short staff, long staff, single broadsword, double sword, spear, dagger, hook, etc) and excelled in the mantis double-hand straight sword.

His students around the world are a testament to his skill, perfectionism, professionalism, patience and teaching ability.

Master Wang was born in 1970. He began learning Shaolin martial arts when he was only 6 years old. Due to the social turbulence at the time he learned in hiding from an old Shaolin Master. He mastered the four significant and famous styles in Shaolin Fist: Cha Fist, Hong Fist, Hua Fist and Cannon Fist. Also he learned Shaolin Chi kung, Sanda (Chinese kick-boxing) and Shaolin 18 weapons. He specializes in Shaolin Iron Hand and Qin Na. These forms retain the old Shaolin form perfectly and have an extremely high value in both combat and demonstration.
The characteristics of his kungfu are: hard, cruel and startlingly effective.
In 1987 he joined the Chinese Special Forces and in 1988 he came first in the national Special Forces competition. Subsequently he was appointed head teacher for martial arts in his troop. During his time in the Army, he learned Xingyi Quan and patrimonial Fengseng Quan from famous local masters.
In 1990 he came first on Shaolin Fist form in the National Martial Arts Competition of China. In 1992 he became champion in the Jiangsu provincial Sanda competition. In 1993 he came second in the national Sanda competition. In 1995 he won the gold plate in the National Hard Chi kung Competition. He is currently ranked at level 7. He has wide and varied experience on which to base his martial arts teaching and thoroughly enjoys imparting his knowledge to his students.
Master Cui, 40 years old, International Band One Chinese Martial Arts Master. He started learning Shaolin martial arts when he was six from his father who used to be a Shaolin warrior monk. He learnt Chen style Taichi from a great Chen Style Taichi master for 8 years when he was 17 years old, then learnt Xingyi and Preying Mantis Boxing. He has been working as a master since 1996 for more than 10 years in Yantai Laishan Martial arts Association and has accumulated good teaching experience. During this time, he took many students to enter the martial arts competition and they received many individual and collective prizes, such as the individual First place award in the Youth Group Chen Style Taichi and collective Second place awarded in the National Martial Arts Competition held in 1998. In the year 2000, they got a First place award for Shaolin and a First place award for Taichi in the Shandong Martial arts Championship competition. Daily Schedule

Traditional Chinese Martial Arts Schools The ChineseTraditionalKungfuSchool is located in Shandong Province, China. It is situated in a beautiful mountain setting on the site of a spacious ex-military base to the east of the coastal city of Yantai. The School specialises in teaching external and internal Chinese martial arts and we pride ourselves in cultivating a friendly, relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. The external curriculum focuses on the stunning art of Mantis Kungfu (including weapons forms) and we also provide expert tuition in traditional Shaolin Kungfu, which is very rarely taught in other schools and is practically unavailable to Westerners in other parts of China. The internal martial arts offered are Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Xing Yi and Ba Gua. Our masters are proud of the quality of their teaching and are extremely skilled and experienced in their chosen disciplines. We are confident that they will provide you with the best quality teaching available in China today. Each one of our masters has been successfully training students for many years, using both modern and ancient techniques which are little known outside of China. We also provide classes in Taoism, Buddhism, Mandarin, calligraphy, massage and acupuncture on request. The environment is a first class setting for training in Kungfu and Qi gong with wonderful fresh air, pine trees, fruit trees and beautifully tended gardens. The school has also been honoured by the government as a Provincial Flower Garden. Our students enjoy a comfortable lifestyle which it would be difficult to find at most other schools. We provide three balanced, nutritious meals per day cooked by our skilled on-site chef, free internet facilities, a pool table, table-tennis room, basketball court, clean western style bathrooms and shower room, washing machine for clothes, cheap and easy access to local amenities such as supermarkets, internet cafes, excellent local restaurants (providing Chinese and Western cuisine), street markets, sauna and gym facilities, various beaches, local tourist attractions and stunning mountain walks. All of the students who study at our school are provided with their own spacious room containing a western-style bed, desk, internet access and a wardrobe for clothes. Our school also employs two highly skilled translators to help bridge the language gap and help each student maximise their individual learning potential. We feel that the superb quality of training coupled with the facilities on offer to our students make us one of the premier martial arts establishments in China. Unlike the majority of other martial arts schools, the masters and students enjoy teaching and learning Kungfu in a western- friendly environment which cannot be underestimated. All of the masters are extremely approachable and are on first name terms with the students. They are available to answer any questions or queries you may have and will endeavour to help or advise as much as they possibly can with any aspect of your training. All of our current long-term students would also be happy to offer advice or answer any questions you may have via e-mail. If you are serious about learning Kungfu in China and wish to become a proficient, skilful martial artist, then The Chinese Traditional Kungfu School is the choice for you.

Comments about kungfu training from the students

〈1〉My name is Shlomit [I’m a girl], I had trained under Qu Shifu's instruction at the age of 28 for a month, during which I learnt a lot from him and enjoyed it very much.
Qu Shifu's performing and teaching made me like it and want to learn as much as I could from him.
The trainings combined both internal and external work. He taught us mainly mantis-basics, a form ("Kata") and some qi-gong.

Qu-shifu was patient and thorough. He made us realize and understand the applications of each part of the form.

Qu-shifu was always ready to answer our questions. Every lesson ended with him asking if we have any questions, not to mention his replying to my e-mail questions after I had left.
As a teacher, he was not judgmental, rather - he encouraged us to work as much as we could.
when he noticed I was a little sick he treated me well and recommended of ways to practice (or rest).
It seems he knows a lot about many aspects of kung-fu such as point-massage, qi-gong and praying-mantis style; and he combines them in his teachings.
He truly likes martial arts, and considering all the Chinese and foreign students that keep coming to him, he apparently likes teaching as well. he told me he likes martial arts and that's why he likes all of us who are interested in the field.
I went on feeling that I got a lot from his teaching, and waiting for the opportunities to keep going on with it, in addition to many things I still have to work on.
For me, training under Qu-shifu was one of the greatest things I did in my trip to china. I recommend this experience to anyone who likes it, and I think Qu-shifu is a special teacher in china for foreigners, that sincerely cares about his student's martial arts trainings and can teach them a lot.
I am waiting for a chance to be trained by him again.
Please contact me if you have any question.
〈2〉As long as I can remember I have always been interested in Martial Arts and having studied various types of martial arts for many years, I felt it time to experience something others can only ever dream about.
At about the age of 7, I began studying Karate which later moved onto Muay
Thai, Kickboxing, Soo Yang Do and two different styles of Kung Fu.
When I first discovered Kung Fu and its methods of training, I knew that I would never look at another martial art. However with any martial art and
its teachings you always feel that you could be training harder and learn
more than what you are being offered so I started to look else where and
hopefully have the opportunity to train with a real Master in the martial
arts country of origin!
I traveled to China to be taught a style of Kung Fu that I had never seen
being practiced before.
The style of 'Tanglang' (Northern Praying Mantis) was quite breath taking
when being seen for the first time as it really is nothing quite like I had
ever seen before!
The movements are so fast and so smooth that it really can only be expressed as an art!
The Master that I had the honor of being taught by was known as Qu Pei Wen.
I had met many different 'Masters' of different Martial Arts before but
nobody even compared to how amazing this teacher really was! Watching him practice his forms was amazing and being taught this was even more spectacular!
I admit that the training was very hard at first but after a week or so you
begin to get used to it.
Being taught by Master Qu was something quite amazing as I was able to learn Qi Gong, Yi Jin Jing, Praying Mantis forms and stances and Praying Mantis boxing.
The training offered also increased my fitness levels, breathing and
strength.
Master Qu always ensured that you had learnt what he had taught you before moving on - something previous teachers that I have had did not seem to care about!
Master Qu is a perfectionist as he truly has mastered the art of Tanglang.
I kept a daily diary of everything that Master Qu said about training and
any pointers/advice that he had to offer. Having been home in the UK now for a couple of months, I still refer to this diary and practice what I was taught.
With a lifetime of training, Master Qu has proved to be the best martial
arts teacher that I have ever had or will ever have!
It really was an honor being taught by a true master like this and it
really was an experience that I will never forget!
I look forward to returning to train with him once again when I have
completed my studies here in the UK.
Thanks for everything Qu Sifu!
You can ask me if you have any question.

〈3〉I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to study under Qu Shifu. I was only with him for one month and I learned quickly from him. He is a man that is dedicated to his art and teaching. He has had many years of instructing and is good at it. Qu pushed me very hard during training and demanded perfection. He would often at the end of class talk for ten or fifteen minutes about the martial arts philosophy and also answer questions. I loved when he would talk to us because it was then that i would really begin to understand Kung Fu in its entirety. Sometimes in the evening us students would gather in Qu's room to talk with him. He was always happy when we would come to spend time with him and was laughing often. I admire how Qu seems to enjoy life to the fullest and was able to pass that on to us students. Even now that am back home in the United States Qu is available by email and happily answers any of my questions I have about my continued training. I hope someday I can train under him again! If anybody has questions about training with Qu Shifu you can feel free to contact me by email at thane17@yahoo.com
〈4〉When I came to China I didn't know anything about mantis boxing. But when I started to learn kung fu my interest grew very quickly. This animal style not just seemed to be a very effective way of fighting but also a good way to train your body. After a while you can feel clearly a changing of your whole body. Joints and tendons become more flexible and stronger. That means also that you feel more comfortable in normal life. The internal training which is part of mantis boxing has a positive effect of the wellbeing, too. But first of all I think I have to thank Master Qu who made the training of mantis boxing because of his traditional and diversified way of teaching so interesting.
In mantis boxing there are not just fist forms to learn but also weapon forms. Some people say weapon forms are not practical. I would say that is not true because by handling a weapon such as staff or sword your body is getting also stronger and more flexible. Another point is that you have to learn to use not only the strength of your muscles but the strength of your whole body otherwise you will become very fast tired by doing forms. Especially forms with weapons. The real marital artists don't waste their time in building up their muscles by lifting weights. They generate their power by standing stands. I think that is the key of any kind of martial arts. By standing stands they also train their muscles but mostly it is to train the tendons to make them stronger and more flexible and above all to build up internal power. It is amazing to see how a master can use his internal strength to defeat an opponent who is much bigger than himself. The real martial artists are able to move their energy which is also called "Qi" through their body and focus it suddenly on a special point to give out strength. This is just a short overview what I have been taught in mantis boxing. But one thing is sure if you start to learn it you will like it because you will see that it affects the normal life in a positive way.

〈5〉My name is Lee Faller and I come from Glasgow, Scotland . I have been studying Kung fu for 6 years now and I have trained with different teachers. Qu Peiwen has by far been the most impressive , I am very proud and grateful to master Qu for all that he has taught me and I plan to learn more from him in the future. Master Qu has unbelievable speed and power that you must see to appreciate. The thing that stands out most about master Qu is kindness he is more than a teacher he is also a friend. I have yet to meet another person who has the same passion for what they do. I would recommend anyone who has an interest in Chinese kung fu to learn from master Qu it will be an experience you will remember for the rest of your life. Thank you Qu Shifu.

〈6〉I want to express my gratitude to Qu Sifu, training martial arts with such a great Master was indeed an honor. I've liked Chinese Martial Arts since I was 13 years old, ever since it had been my dream to come to China to learn martial arts from real Kung fu Masters. I had to wait 15 years for my dream to come true, I came to China on 2006 and had the opportunity of learning Mantis Fist from Qu Sifu. He really knows how to teach his students, he's patience, he will teach you step by step, he's strict with you, he always wants you to do things the right way, he's really a great Master and human being. Now my plan is to stay and keep learning Kung Fu in China, it is a sure thing that someday I will learn from him again. Thanks Qu Sifu.

〈7〉"I have so much to say, I do not know where to begin, but i will start by introducing myself. My name is David Hendry, I'm from Scotland.I came to China in February 2006 to study kung fu and I was lucky enough to find Master Qu.

When i first arrived in China my physical conidtion was not very good, but under Master Qu's guidance and endless patience it improved rapidly, much faster than i could have hoped for, thanks to his vast knowledge of physical training and how to train individuals according to their needs, and also thanks to his vast knowledge of Qi Gong.

I have found Mantis boxing to be an amazing system for self defence and for health keeping.

One of the things i like best about Mantis is that it makes it easy for a smaller person to combat with bigger people or multiple opponents, due to it's use of internal strength, speed and redirecting opponents force, as opposed to using your own muscle power against your opponents muscle power.
Mantis also contains a lot of conditioning routines to strengthen bones and prepare the body to withstand attacks.
However my favourite part of Master Qu's teaching is the Qi Gong, this was the main contribution to the rapid improvement of my health, and a vital part of real kung fu.

When you study Mantis you get to see your body changing and becoming stronger, your tendons become stronger, and you become faster, this has made me far more confident and happy in my everyday life.

Master Qu is the greatest man i have ever met, he has skill that takes a lifetime to acheive, strength and speed that have to be seen to be beleived, discipline that only true masters have and patience and kindness that is so hard to find in people these days!
In fact, after the time I have spent with Master Qu, I have chosen to move my life to China so I can study under him for as long as possible. I plan on being here for at least the next 5 years, although I will probably be here much longer. If anyone has any questions on my experience learning from Master Qu feel free to email me at: kungfoodavid@yahoo.co.uk

(1) Having trained and another kung fu school in China i must say that Master Qu's school is far superior. The teaching is superior, the food is superior and it is also more value for your money. Do not be fooled by schools with lower prices because even though it may cost less i can guarantee you will not get value for your money and you will experience lots of extra charges that are not stated on the websites. Master Qu's shool is worth every penny as you will not be charged an administration fee, you will not be charged for the internet, you will be proveded with free mineral water. You even get clean bedding every week i have already recommended Master Qu's school to many people and i recomend the school to anyone who wishes to train in China. I will not train at any other school in China as i am very confident i will not recieve the same quality of teaching and also will not get as much value for my money.
If anyone has any questions regarding the school please do not hesitate to email me and ask me.

(2) The Mantis taught here is of excellent quality, and the?masters have a wonderful grasp of how to treat individual development, and they cater well for western needs; for instance the toilet and shower facilities are unlike those available elsewhere. As a beginner I have found the atmosphere calm and freindly, while condusive to learning. The hours of training are well stuctured to give a full day of exercise, but also provide time to relax. The training facilities are equally impressive, and the grounds are large enough to house all of our needs, for training and leisure. The meals served are suited to our needs, are always large enough and very nice. There is little to complain about, and the fees are intirely justified when one considers how much is gained from the experience. The first class teaching, individual rooms, excellent dining, and the atmosphere, each make the acadamy a worthy holiday and a great training location. Honestly, having heard about other acadamies in the region this is a perfect place, crucially with some of the best teachers available fora more than reasonable price. (3)If you're reading this then presumably you already have at least the consideration of coming to this school consequently I'm writing this to give my experience of Qu Shifu's school to help you reach a conclusion. I"ve had an amazing time here so far and in every regard this has been the best money I've spent on something in ages. Initially I was supprised by the fees supposing that they were excessive and yet having been here I can't stress how important they are. I have been to cheaper schools than this one and they were not worth the money I saved. Here the fees go back on the students in order to create a much better training experience. Examples include:

1) Great food! (Anyone who's been to a training school before will know how important this is and how it's usually ignored!) Master Li prepares a great selection of food and we even get things like porridge in the morning! So you can really tell they go out of their way for us.

2) The enviroment is open and peaceful and the fees allow for a private training enviroment without distractions such as loads of other people and cars etc.

3) Western Toilets! Again if you haven't been to this part of the world you need to understand that cheaper places don't bother and stick with the hole in the ground system.

4) Internet in every room is great too as it helps to keep in touch with loved ones etc which is pretty important!

5) Training equipment provided such as swords and spears. Cheaper academies i've been to don't supply these and the cost is born on the individual.

6) Snooker Room and Table Tennis rooms are also great spots to chill out and socialise, again not available at cheaper places.

There are loads more but I really won't bore you with them! Ultimately what it comes down to is the quality of the teaching which is first rate. Qu Shifu as well as all the others are extremely capable and teach real combat techniques and forms which are tested every day in class. There's no fancy mess here only good martial arts so if that's what you're looking for I'd
definitely say this is the place for you.

For more information feel free to contact me at bagua@hotmail.co.uk
Cheers,Patrick Wood
(4) Having experienced another kung fu school in China, I can honestly say this school is far superior value for money, there are no hidden charges here, here they do not charge extra for airport pick up fees, there are no hidden administration fees when you arrive, here i have a free internet connection in my room and students without a computer can use the schools computers for free, here all training equiptment is provided by the school, mineral water is provided by the school, the food is of amazing quality and most importantly, the quality of the Masters teachings make this school the best value you will find.
If you are considering going to a kung fu school?in China, remember, you get what you pay for.
If anyone has any questions about the school, the Masters here or training in China feel free to contact me at kungfoodavid@yahoo.co.uk

(5)Hey I’ll make this short and sweet. If you are looking to learn traditional kung fu in China this is the place. The masters are great, highly skilled and excellent teachers. There’s also:
  • Excellent food – I’m talking restauarant quality. Seriously!
  • Awesome training environment – the schools is so quiet and natural, you feel like you’re at home. I haven’t been so chilled out for ages! Add that to the beautiful and picturesque surroundings – this place is hard to beat!
  • Great atmosphere – there’s a friendly and chilled atmosphere in the place. This largely down to Qu Shifu – the owner – who is a great guy – friendly, extremely honest and trustworthy.
  • And if you’re bored there’s free internet, basketball, table tennis, pool and badminton.
Combine that with the excellent training facilties (all provided free of charge) and you have a great school which is great value for money. I’ve been to other schools in China and there’s loads of hidden costs and if I’m honest a lot of them are a rip-off.

All the best with your kung fu and maybe I’ll see you soon.

Comments about tuition from the students

(1) Hi, my name is Alec and I study Shaolin Kungfu at Master Qu’s ChineseTraditionalKungfuSchool near Yantai in China. I came to China to study because my brother is a student of Master Qu’s and he highly recommended him as both a friend and a teacher. At present, I plan to study for a full year under my master, Wang Shifu. The style I have chosen is the Traditional Shaolin art, as opposed to the Wushu variant. It is a hard, direct and relentless fighting style which is both athletic and energetic but also extremely graceful and elegant to behold. My master, Wang Shifu, is one of the most amazing men I have ever met. His Kungfu skill is nothing short of astounding and his power has to be seen to be believed. He is a kind, friendly and patient teacher who always has time to answer his students’ questions, to show us fully the techniques involved and to ensure our full understanding of things. Not only that, but he also gives clear and concise answers, often in visual form, to help each individual with the concepts involved in learning Kungfu. I am honoured that I have the opportunity to learn from someone who is not just a Master, but also a friend. When I watch my Shifu practice his Kungfu I am truly taken aback by how fantastic he makes it look. He moves with grace of one man, but underneath lurks the power of an entire army. He has taught me many, many things since I first became his student and each one of them has made my Kungfu better, sharper, faster and stronger. I have learned traditional Chinese exercises for conditioning my body, how to develop explosive power, how to train individual aspects of Kungfu, exercises for harnessing and developing Qi and much more. Sometimes, the smallest detail in a technique means the difference between success and failure and Wang Shifu makes sure that we not only know, but understandthese details in order to help us improve exponentionally. Master Qu has a fantastic school and I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about learning Kungfu in China. Master Qu is also a remarkable man. His style of Mantis Kungfu is fascinating. His movements are perfect and faultless with true power and speed. He is also a friendly, caring and trustworthy Master who is dedicated to his school and his students. He will go out of his way to make sure you are cared for and comfortable. I thoroughly enjoy spending time talking with the masters as we have a relaxed and informal environment within the school. Everyone trains seriously in class and then enjoys each-others company out with it. I have the utmost admiration and respect for all of the masters here at the school and watching them perform or simply just speaking to them proves beyond any reasonable doubt that they are true masters of their chosen arts. All of the Masters here enjoy teaching and working with foreign students and do their utmost to create a friendly environment which is excellent for training. The facilities are far better than I imagined they would be in China and we enjoy many benefits. Overall, I cannot think of anything I would rather be doing just now than training here at Master Qu’s school. I am becoming fitter and stronger by the day, my Chinese is improving rapidly and I enjoy the friendliness and the hospitality of the Chinese people, all of whom have made me feel extremely welcome. I have made many new friends here with the Masters, translators and students and they are friendships which I hope will continue throughout my life. If there is anything you would like to ask me or have any queries or questions regarding the school, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will be happy to respond: yantaialec@hotmail.com
(2) I am very happy with my expirience here, I feel like I have learned a lot in a very short amount of time. My teacher is very Attentive and helpfull and makes learning very easy. We are presented with many strength training exercises and streching every day so you notice and increase in flexability and power that can be applied not only to your martial arts practise but also to every other aspect of your life. We are provided awesome food that is both healthy and tastes great. This school is great and you will not regret your time here. ~cobra

(3)I studied Shaolin kung fu with Master Wang for 2 months, and it left me wanting to learn much more, so I intend to return to train again soon. I enjoyed every minute of training with Wang Sifu, even when the training was hard, and the body was aching. When teaching, Sifu is understanding and more importantly patient while you learn different moves or techniques, but he also ensures all aspects are correct. All the masters at the school are excellent, and master student relationships are very good. I learnt an immense amount in my short time, and can’t wait to get back.

The accommodation at the school is basic but adequate, and although I wasn’t expecting much had no complaints. The food served is really good, healthy and balanced. The food locally away from the school is tasty and cheap.

All the staff, masters and translators are all friendly and approachable which creates a good atmosphere at the school. Life away from the school at weekends is pretty good fun with Muping (30 min) or Yantai (1 hour) offer plenty of entertainment.

Those who finish the study in the school will be given the certificate from the school. Those who become good at martial arts will be given the level certificate authorized from the Chinese martial arts association.

Visa

There are two options when applying for a visa to China:
The first (and easiest) is to apply for a tourist or ‘L’ visa from the Chinese Embassy in your country. This is typically available for up to 3 months and may be sufficient for your stay with us. If you need any help extending it, we can help you extend it to more than 10 months when you get to the school.
For longer term students, you will require a student or ‘X’ visa. The quickest and simplest way to process this is for you to apply for a tourist (L) visa and then we can assist you to convert it to student status upon your arrival at the school. The cost of this is determined by the Chinese Governmental Price policy.
It is possible to obtain a student visa from your ‘local’ Embassy but we will need to supply you with a letter of invitation, and a form ‘JW202’. This is a lengthy and time consuming process and does impose a certain amount of responsibility upon the school as your official status within China is registered as being with us. In the past, there have been instances where student visa’s have been issued and the student has not come to the school, so if you wish us to obtain a student visa before your arrival, we would ask you to forward a $300 deposit and confirm your request, at least, 3 months in advance of arrival. If, for any reason, you find you will no longer be able to attend the school, your deposit will be refunded (minus any costs incurred) and the visa will be cancelled.

Thank you so much for sharing this detailed article and useful as well.
I'm thinking to follow traditional kung fu lessons, because I've heard that they are great and that we can learn self defense techniques.
I can't wait to start! I love everything about this discipline. :)
